Marie Smith is a contemporary Irish sculptor whose work focuses on figurative and portrait sculpture. Based in County Cavan, Ireland, her practice combines strong anatomical understanding with an intuitive approach to gesture and emotion, resulting in contemporary sculpture that captures quiet moments of introspection and truth.

Working directly from life whenever possible, Smith’s figurative and portrait sculpture aims to capture both the physical likeness as well as the character and presence of the sitter. Through careful observation, technical skill and sensitivity to the material, she creates sculptures that evoke stillness, contemplation, whilst always leaving room for the viewers own interpretation and emotional response.

Although deeply rooted in the traditions of figurative art, her work retains a distinctly contemporary presence and has been exhibited widely both in Ireland and internationally. Works have been exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy, the Royal Ulster Academy, the Society of Portrait Sculptors and the Centre Culturel Irlandais. Her work has also been shortlisted for the Zurich Portrait Prize at the National Gallery of Ireland in 2022 and in 2023, when her portrait Armand received the Highly Commended award.
