Hercules On The (Funeral) Pyre / Hercule sur le bûcher
Gicelee print (unframed) of a mixed media drawing made from the marble sculpture at The Louvre in Paris. Artist Marie Smith spent countless hours drawing at the Louvre when she lived in Paris. The French Sculpture Rooms were a favourite place to draw the masterpieces informing her practice to this day. Hercules On The (Funeral) Pyre / Hercule sur le bûcher was drawn from the marble statue by Guillaume Coustou (Lyon, 1677 – Paris , 1746).
The image depicts the death of Hercules. Having been fatally poisoned by his jealous wife Deianira, he chose to be burned alive on a funeral pyre rather than endure a long and agonizing death. In the fire, only his mortal flesh was consumed by flames, his immortal body ascended to Mount Olympus, where he was welcomed by his father, Zeus.
The original drawing was scanned using a Cruse Scanner at The Copperhouse Gallery, Dublin. It is printed on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag 305gsm archival paper printed using pigment archival inks. Limited edition of 50. Prints are signed by the artist with the edition number.
